The check runs from our server, because a browser cannot read the status of another site. Only public addresses on ports 80 and 443 are allowed, redirects are reported rather than followed, and no page content is downloaded.
How it works
The check runs from our server, not your browser. A browser is not allowed to read the response of another website, so it cannot tell you whether that site is up — only a server can.
The timings are the useful part. "Finding the address" is DNS. "Connecting" is reaching the server. "Securing the connection" is the HTTPS handshake, and it is the step most often quietly slow — a certificate chain that takes seconds to verify delays every first-time visitor.
A redirect is reported rather than followed, so you can see exactly where a domain sends people. That is often how you discover a site still redirecting to an address that no longer exists.
Only public websites on the normal web ports can be checked. Addresses on a private network are refused, because a tool that would fetch anything becomes a way to probe networks that are none of its business.
