An estimate for planning. PAYE is charged on gross pay less the employee NSSF contribution. Confirm against current TRA, NSSF and WCF rules before filing.
How it works
PAYE is not charged on your full salary. The employee's NSSF contribution comes off first, and the tax bands are applied to what is left — which is why the taxable figure below is lower than the gross.
The bands are progressive. Only the portion of income falling inside a band is taxed at that band's rate, so a raise never leaves someone worse off.
WCF and SDL are employer costs. They do not come out of the employee's pay, but they are part of what the role actually costs the business — which is what the employer total shows.
SDL applies only to employers above the staff threshold. Turn it off if that is not you.
Working backwards from a take-home figure is useful when you have agreed a net salary with someone and need to know what to budget. There is no simple formula for it, because the tax is progressive — the tool solves for it.
